The conversation about the future of work often focuses on what is being lost, the jobs that automation and AI will eliminate. That conversation is real and worth having. But it misses the larger story: the same forces displacing certain roles are creating an enormous number of new ones, many of which did not exist a decade ago and some of which do not yet have agreed job titles.

The World Economic Forum's Future of Jobs Report 2025, which surveyed over 1,000 companies across 55 economies, is the most comprehensive attempt to map where employment is heading. Its findings are the basis for much of what follows, supplemented by data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics and sector-specific research.

The Big Picture: What the Numbers Actually Say

By 2030, the WEF projects 170 million new roles will be created globally while 92 million existing roles are displaced, a net increase of 78 million jobs. The displacement is real: clerical and administrative roles, data entry workers, and certain finance and accounting positions face the steepest declines. But the creation is larger, and it is concentrated in specific, learnable areas.

Technology skills in AI, big data, and cybersecurity are expected to see the fastest demand growth. But the report is explicit that human skills, analytical thinking, creative problem-solving, resilience, and interpersonal communication, will remain critically important and are harder to automate than technical skills alone.

1. AI and Machine Learning Specialists

AI and machine learning specialists top the WEF's list of the fastest-growing roles and are expected to remain there through 2030. The demand comes from virtually every sector, healthcare organisations training diagnostic models, financial firms building fraud detection systems, manufacturers optimising production lines, and retailers personalising customer experiences at scale.

The US Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that roles in this cluster will grow by over 26% through 2030, which is roughly five times the average for all occupations. Entry-level salaries for machine learning engineers in developed economies currently sit between $90,000 and $130,000 USD per year, with experienced specialists commanding significantly more.

The barrier to entry is lower than many people assume. While top research roles require advanced degrees, a large proportion of practical AI implementation work can be accessed through structured online programmes, bootcamps, and self-directed learning. The critical skills are Python programming, statistical reasoning, and familiarity with major frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch.

2. Sustainability and Green Energy Specialists

The global transition to clean energy is creating an enormous wave of employment. The WEF identifies green economy roles, including renewable energy engineers, sustainability managers, environmental compliance officers, and climate data analysts, as among the largest growth categories in absolute numbers through 2030.

Solar and wind energy alone are projected to add millions of jobs globally, with significant growth in installation, maintenance, grid integration, and energy storage. Beyond energy, supply chain sustainability roles are proliferating as large corporations face regulatory and investor pressure to document and reduce their environmental footprints.

The green economy is notable for requiring a blend of technical and policy knowledge that few people currently possess, creating significant opportunity for workers who can bridge engineering, environmental science, and business. Salaries vary widely by role and region, but environmental engineers and sustainability managers in OECD countries typically earn between $65,000 and $120,000 USD annually.

3. Data Analysts and Scientists

Data analyst roles have been growing for a decade and show no sign of slowing. The WEF ranks them among the top five fastest-growing occupations, and the BLS projects growth of around 23% through 2030. Every organisation that collects data, which is now essentially every organisation, needs people who can extract meaningful insights from it.

The distinction between data analyst and data scientist is blurring. Analysts traditionally worked with structured data using tools like Excel, SQL, and Tableau. Scientists worked with larger, messier datasets using programming languages and statistical modelling. Today, the most in-demand practitioners can do both, and the addition of AI tools is raising the ceiling on what a single person can accomplish.

Entry into this field is genuinely accessible. SQL is learnable in weeks. Python's data science libraries, pandas, NumPy, matplotlib, have excellent free documentation. Platforms like Kaggle offer real datasets for practice. Many working data analysts are self-taught or hold certificates rather than formal degrees.

4. Cybersecurity Professionals

The global cybersecurity workforce gap, the difference between the number of professionals needed and the number available, stood at approximately 4 million people in 2025, according to ISC2's annual Cybersecurity Workforce Study. By 2030, this gap is projected to widen further as the attack surface expands with more connected devices, cloud migration, and AI-enabled threats.

The WEF specifically highlights information security analysts as one of the fastest-growing roles globally. Governments, banks, hospitals, critical infrastructure operators, and technology companies are all increasing cybersecurity headcount significantly. In the US alone, the BLS projects 33% growth in information security analyst roles through 2030, the highest growth rate of any major occupation category.

Cybersecurity offers one of the clearest pathways from low starting point to high salary in any technical field. Entry-level analysts earn $65,000 to $85,000 USD in most markets; experienced professionals with specialist certifications (CISSP, CEH, OSCP) frequently earn over $150,000. Several vendor-neutral certifications can be completed in months and are widely recognised by employers.

5. Healthcare and Nursing Professionals

Healthcare was already facing a global worker shortage before the pandemic accelerated it. By 2030, the WHO projects a global shortfall of approximately 10 million health workers. Nursing professionals, care workers, medical technologists, and health data specialists are all in the WEF's top-ten fastest-growing roles in absolute job numbers.

Ageing populations in Europe, North America, Japan, and increasingly China are the main structural driver. More people living longer means more demand for chronic disease management, elder care, and specialist medical support. The BLS projects registered nursing roles in the US will grow by 6% through 2030, while nurse practitioners, who can function more independently than RNs, are projected to grow by 46%.

Healthcare roles have an additional characteristic that makes them valuable: they are fundamentally resistant to automation. Physical care, patient communication, and clinical judgement under uncertainty remain deeply human activities. AI is augmenting healthcare workers rather than replacing them, at least for the foreseeable future.

6. Software and Application Developers

Software development remains one of the most consistently in-demand fields globally. The WEF projects continued strong growth through 2030, and the BLS forecasts 17% growth in software developer roles in the US, well above average. Demand is particularly strong for mobile developers, full-stack web developers, cloud engineers, and developers with AI integration experience.

The global nature of software work means developers in virtually any country can access international job markets. Remote work has normalised in this sector more than almost any other, meaning a developer in Eastern Europe, Latin America, or Southeast Asia can compete for roles paying Western salaries. This is shifting global talent flows significantly.

Bootcamp graduates now work alongside computer science PhDs at many major tech companies. The field rewards demonstrated ability, a strong portfolio of projects is often more persuasive to hiring managers than formal credentials.

7. Teachers and Education Specialists

Education professionals appear in the WEF's top-ten largest-growing roles in absolute numbers, a finding that surprises many people. Secondary school teachers, vocational trainers, and education technology specialists are all expected to see significant demand growth through 2030, driven by population growth in developing economies and the massive reskilling challenge in developed ones.

The reskilling dimension is particularly significant. As automation displaces workers from routine roles, there is growing demand for training providers who can help adults move into new careers. Corporate learning and development functions are expanding. Vocational and technical education, long underfunded relative to university education, is receiving increased investment in many countries as governments recognise the mismatch between skills being taught and skills being demanded.

8. Supply Chain and Logistics Specialists

The supply chain disruptions of the early 2020s permanently elevated the strategic importance of logistics and supply chain management. Companies that previously treated supply chain as a back-office function now view it as a core competitive capability. The WEF projects supply chain and logistics specialist roles among the top-ten fastest-growing positions through 2030.

The field is being transformed by technology, route optimisation algorithms, warehouse robotics, predictive demand planning, and sustainability tracking, which means supply chain professionals increasingly need data literacy alongside traditional logistics knowledge. Roles in this space command salaries from $60,000 to $130,000 USD depending on seniority and specialisation.

The Skills That Cut Across All of These Roles

Beyond specific job categories, the WEF's research identifies a set of skills that employers across industries are prioritising. Analytical thinking, the ability to evaluate complex information and make sound judgements, ranks first. Creative thinking comes second. Technology literacy, curiosity, and resilience round out the top five cognitive skills.

Notably, AI and big data literacy appears for the first time in the top ten most important skills for 2025-2030, and it is climbing. This does not mean everyone needs to be a machine learning engineer. It means that understanding what AI tools can and cannot do, being able to use them effectively, and recognising their limitations will become baseline expectations across most professional roles.

The jobs being created are not all highly technical. Care workers, delivery drivers, construction workers, and teachers are all in the WEF's top-ten largest growth categories in absolute terms. The common thread is not complexity, it is that these roles require physical presence, human judgement, or interpersonal connection that current technology cannot replicate.

What This Means for You

The honest takeaway from all of this data is that the future of work is not a single story. It is not "AI takes everything" and it is not "nothing will change." It is a significant restructuring that will reward people who invest in skills with long shelf lives, analytical reasoning, communication, technological adaptability, alongside specific technical knowledge in growing fields.

The people best positioned for 2030 are not necessarily those with the most impressive current credentials. They are the ones investing now in skills that will be valued then, staying curious about how their field is changing, and building the kind of judgment and interpersonal capability that no model or algorithm can yet replicate.
